Modeling Mesoscale Eddies Generated Over the Continental Slope, East Antarctica

چکیده
Mesoscale eddies are abundant over the Antarctic continental slope, with potential to regulate water masses transport, mixing, and energy transfer. Over relatively cold fresh shelf regions around margins, in absence of dense overflows, baroclinic instability Slope Current is still favorable generation mesoscale eddies. However, barely observed due sparsity situ hydrographic observations. Based on an idealized eddy-resolving coupled ocean-ice model, this study investigates characteristics corresponding influences local properties East Antarctica. With aid automated eddy detection algorithm, bowl-shaped identified from simulated velocity vector geometry. The Cyclonic Eddies (CE) has a barotropic vertical structure extending more than 2,500 m depth, while shear Anticyclonic (AE) strong at upper 200 layer. can trap southern flank slope front flow offshore warm saline region. Therefore, not only governed by polarities but also eddy-induced heat salt transport.

REAL - TIME MESOSCALE MODELING OVER ANTARCTICA The Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System
NOVEMBER 2003 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | L ogistical and scientific operations in Antarctica are critically dependent on numerical weather guidance. The extreme, unforgiving environment amplifies the risks stemming from poor forecasts, while the sparse observing network often leaves forecasters heavily reliant on numerical weather prediction (NWP). To the operation of real-time mesoscale...
متن کاملModeling Of Selected Continental Slope Processes
The objectives of this project are to: (1) Characterize the effect of spatial variations in deposition and erosion on the fluid flow, pore pressures and thus the stability of continental slope sediments. (2) Constrain the impact of individual turbidity currents on seafloor evolution. (3) Develop a technique for correlating stratigraphy complicated by spatial variations in sedimentation, erosion...
متن کاملObservations of Boundary Mixing Over the Continental Slope
Towed-body observations of mixing over the continental slope reveal the great lateral extent (several km) of continuously turbulent fluid within a few hundred meters of the boundary at 1600 m depth. The largest turbulent dissipation rates were observed over a 5 km horizontal region near a slope critical to the M2 internal tide. Averaged over a submarine landslide oriented perpendicularly to the...

متن کاملMesoscale eddies transport deep-sea sediments
Mesoscale eddies, which contribute to long-distance water mass transport and biogeochemical budget in the upper ocean, have recently been taken into assessment of the deep-sea hydrodynamic variability. However, how such eddies influence sediment movement in the deepwater environment has not been explored. Here for the first time we observed deep-sea sediment transport processes driven by mesosc...
